Cash for Clunkers Reveals the True Selfish Side of Americans

Where is the outrage for blowing a few billion of your kids money for a government handout? I went to protest the bailouts and stimulus plans that Congress greedily passed. Many other citizens did too. But now that the government is giving the everyday folk a chance at the trough, I’m not seeing too much in the way of protest for that. This is government welfare and waste just as assuredly as the stimulus and bailouts were. If you bought a car with the government handout and protested against the stimulus and bailouts then you are simply a hypocrite. Hopefully this is not the case in all but a few instances. Kicking the financial can down the road will not help our economy or budget. Nor is it fair to make future generations pay for all this crap.  I like what the 5 Minute Forecast from Agora Financial had to say about it:

We all piss and moan over bank bailouts and Big Three handouts — but not because it’s unjust or because it defies capitalist logic — but because most people just want a free lunch of their own. Now that the government is throwing Joe Six-pack a bone, we’re leaving the pickets at home, lining up outside dealerships and drooling all over ourselves at the prospect of a shiny new consumable. We spent a billion dollars of the next generation’s money — traded in over 200,000 working cars for new ones — in just one week. C’mon… that’s not prudent. It’s selfish.

Engaging ‘cash for clunkers’ isn’t seizing a chance to stick it to the man. It’s just the opposite. Play along, and we’re just pawns in their game.
